North Schuylkill to raise property taxes, 2022-23 budget approved

The North Schuylkill School Board gathered for their monthly board meeting on Wednesday evening.
One thing on the agenda was property tax increases with the school district of Schuylkill County and Columbia County. Last year’s property tax was 45.14 thousandths. For the 2022-2023 financial year, it will increase to 46.76 thousandths. The balance of local taxes will remain the same as the previous year. The budget was approved by all Board members present. Council members Janine Simms, Roy Green and Suzanne O’Neill were not present.

The final budget for 2022-2023 was also approved for an amount of $33,855,745. This is an increase of $2,425,275 in expenses over the previous year.

Schuylkill Haven Seltzer Group will continue to be the district’s insurance advisor for the coming year.

Dr. Rob Thurich has been appointed district medical officer, with no increase in the cost of examinations per child. Dr. Frank Blozousky has been named district dentist for the coming year.

Chase Meyers and Gavin Mentzer were hired as lifeguards and swim instructors at the Donald Bricker Natatorium for $8.50 an hour.

Nicole Wehry, Anthony Tenaglia and Gene Zdiera were hired as temporary part-time summer guards at the rate of $11.00 per hour.

Allison Hughes was hired as an elementary special education teacher with a starting salary of $51,875.00 beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.

The following coaches have been approved for future seasons:

  • Volunteer football coaches: Doug Weist and Tim Prock
  • Nick Brayford as Spring 2023 Baseball Head Coach
  • Dominick Grasso as Softball Softball Head Coach for Spring 2023
  • Kevin Keating as Athletics Head Coach for Spring 2023
  • Sydney Casey as Volunteer Women’s Soccer Coach for the Fall 2022 Season
  • Emily Hass as a volunteer Marching Band Assistant for the 2022-23 season.

MaryAnn Woodward was nominated and elected Treasurer of the Board Office.

The resignation of Suzanne O’Neill, member of the board of directors, was accepted by the members of the board present. An announcement has been made that Superintendent Robert Ackell is currently accepting letters of interest from anyone interested in being appointed to the board position through July 6.

The next public board meeting is scheduled for July 13, 2022. At this meeting, the new board member will be appointed.
