NMMC will sell the properties of 119 unpaid land, asks to settle the contributions within 21 days

The Property Tax Department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has warned 119 unpaid property tax to pay taxes or their properties will be sold to collect pending taxes. The civic organization has given 21 days to settle the pending taxes. Among the main defaults were leading manufacturers and industrial units in the city. The civic body has already grasped the failing properties.

“Proceedings for the confiscation of properties that have not paid taxes were initiated under Rule 45 of Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act 8 and an ordinance was issued by the Land Tax Department stating that if property tax arrears are not paid to the company within 21 days. with the cost of collection on their income, the property will be sold, ”said a property tax official.

In the past two months after issuing pending tax payment notices, the civic body has seized properties. At the beginning of August, the civic body had put in default to pay their taxes or it would auction their properties to recover the taxes.

Civic leader Abhijit Bangar has asked the property tax department to speed up the process of auctioning properties if they do not respond to the notice within a given time frame.

Property tax is one of the main sources of business revenue and due to the outbreak of a pandemic, the civic body needs funds to fight it.

The NMMC had proposed the Abhay Yojana to provide 75 percent interest relief on property arrears. Even during those two months of the program, a total of 119 properties with significant arrears did not pay their taxes and did not even respond to further notices.

Out of the total of 119 properties with large amounts pending tax, 19 properties are in Belapur district, 20 in Nerul district, 34 in Vashi district, 10 in Turbhe district, 17 in Koparkhairane district, 12 in the Ghansoli district and 7 in the Airoli district. “There are many open plots including commercial and industrial units. A few of the properties are owned by well-known developers in the city, ”said a property tax official.
