Changes to the way to pay overdue property taxes in Cabell County

CABELL COUNTY, West Virginia (WSAZ) – As the 2020 Cabell County overdue property tax payment deadline approaches, people used to paying with a card or check will need to adjust to starting next month.

“I know it’s embarrassing, but we have to take cash or money orders at this point,” Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said.

As of October 5, payments will only be accepted by cashier’s check, money order or cash.

No personal checks, credit or debit cards will be authorized.

Since the deadline is November 1, this gives the sheriff’s office about a month to make sure all credit and debit card payments are legitimate. It also leaves enough time for personal checks to clear.

“The people who have found a way or tried to manipulate the system are the reason we are doing this,” Zerkle said.

Zerkle says they’ve run into issues with insufficient funds from personal checks in the past and, more recently, credit card disputes.

“Last year what would happen to us is someone came in at the last minute, paid with a credit card, then after the tax sale deadline – they waived the fee, they canceled the payment on the credit card, ”Zerkle said. .

If you want to pay by card or check, Zerkle advises you to make the payment as soon as possible.

Your current taxes are not affected by this. You can still pay these with credit and debit cards, as well as personal checks.
