Bombay: The Income Tax Department said actor and social activist Sonu Sood made a tax invasion of Rs. 20 crore. The 48-year-old actor’s home and some sites linked to him had been raided for three days.

“During a search of the premises of the actor and his associates, incriminating evidence relating to tax evasion was found. The main modus operandi followed by the actor had been to channel his unrecorded income under the form of bogus unsecured loans from many bogus entities, ”the tax department said in the statement.

“Investigations have so far revealed the use of 20 of these entries, which providers, upon examination, have accepted under oath of having given bogus accommodation entries. They agreed to have issued checks instead of cash. There have been cases where business receipts have been disguised as loans in the books of account for the purpose of tax evasion. It was also revealed that these bogus loans were used to make investments and acquire properties. The total amount of evaded tax discovered so far is over 20 crore, ”the tax department said.

Sonu Sood’s office was raided by the IT department on Wednesday. A Lucknow business linked to him was also raided, sources said. It is said that the reason is a falsification of the account books.

The tax raid came days after the actor was declared a brand ambassador for Arvind Kejriwal’s government mentorship program for students in the capital’s schools at a high-level meeting. Sonu Sood subsequently denied any plans for a political debut with Mr. Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi (AAP) party.

The AAP also announced that the Delhi government would soon come up with the country’s “most progressive” film policy, which would give the entertainment industry a boost. Kejriwal and Sood said at the time that no discussion of the policy took place at their meeting.

Sonu’s home has also been raided by IT in the past in 2012. At that time, IT raided the home of Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Nigam and Sonu Sood after red flags were issued regarding their acquisitions. Sood’s house was raided after the actor brought property worth Rs 30 crore.

AAP chief Raghav Chaddha said: “A computer raid on a man as righteous as Sonu Sood, someone who has been called a messiah by thousands of people, someone who has helped the oppressed. If a man like him can be politically targeted in a thoughtful witch hunt, it shows that the current regime is callous and politically insecure.

The raid is believed to have something to do with the high-level meeting with the AAP which was denied by the BJP: “There is nothing to do with this. Any personality can meet anyone. It’s just a research, not a raid. It’s on a pipe. It is not necessary that the person who runs the association has done something wrong… It must be something lower. Income tax is an independent department, which has its own protocol. It does its job, ”said Asif Bhamla, spokesperson for the BJP.

Although he has never shown interest in politics, it was rumored that the actor could run in the Punjab election next year.

The 48-year-old actor has received a lot of praise for his charitable work. He is a social media hero and helped people during the Covid-19 crisis by providing them with transportation, he is also infamous for helping people on Twitter.
